Amateur Player Arrives at Rio PDF Print E-mail

Travis Johnson is not part of any of the poker tours. Not yet, anyway. An underwriter originally from Nebraska, Johnson defeated pro player Steve Karp to win a $1,500 no-limit hold’em tournament, Event 7, at the World Series of Poker at the Rio in Las Vegas.

“I am not a professional,” Johnson said. “I play once or twice a week.”

The victory brought the California resident his first WSOP bracelet.

“The bottom line is – this is fun,” Johnson said. “The World Series of Poker is history-book stuff. I still can’t grasp it all.”

The winner of last year’s tournament, Grant Hinkle, also cashed this time around, finishing 126th.

A total of 297 players received payments.
